How to Apply

To make an application to study a January-start degree please visit the course page or our Undergraduate How to Apply pages, where you will be redirected to UCAS.

Distance Learning programmes at Arts University Plymouth will appeal to applicants who can demonstrate self-motivation, focus and confidence. It is also important that you can identify a suitable area for study (e.g a quiet room or desk space) and access to relevant resources for personal practice (subject-specific tools and software will be discussed at interview). A good level of digital literacy is also essential to support the use of online learning technologies.

January-start degrees are now open for applications for January 2025.

Although many of our students do come in with top grades and high UCAS points, these aren’t necessarily essential for entry. We typically ask for a minimum of 112 UCAS points, but we understand that talented artists, designers and makers can have a wide range of relevant strengths and skills beyond formal qualifications. We’re just as interested in exploring your portfolio and discussing your creative experiences as we are in seeing your grades.

We recognise the value of a variety of qualifications and relevant experience and welcome applications from students who have followed less traditional routes. We also accept a range of international qualifications and will look at each application individually.

For example, our international applicants may have the following profile:

China - We look for 75% in the Gaokao plus IELTS at level 6 or higher (minimum of 5.5 in every component)

USA - GPA of 3.0 in your high school diploma plus one of: SAT circa 1100, ACT circa 24, SAT subjects (two relevant subjects circa 550) or equivalent learning

India - 65% on 12th standard high school certificate

For more information on entry requirements please consult our undergraduate How to Apply page and the UCAS Tariff Table.

All prospective students are asked to submit a portfolio of work and attend an interview with a subject-specialist staff member. We want to see your artistic journey so far and explore your creative intent. We’re not focused on polished outcomes or honed technical skills, but instead how you think and what is important to you. We are interested in hearing about how you approach ideas and the processes you choose to express your ideas.

We encourage you to take a varied approach to communicate your ideas and make use of a range of techniques and media. This will demonstrate your skills, visual awareness, the range of your interests, your experience and your commitment to creativity. Be selective and reflective - curate the story you want to tell us.

Your body of work should contain no more than 20 pieces. These could be objects, images, text, sound work, moving image, web platforms, performance, etc. and may be presented either physically or digitally.

If you are joining one of our January start degrees, your fees will match with those advertised for the academic cycle that the course sits within (ie the preceding September).

For new full-time UK and EU students starting in January 2025, this will be £9,250 per year. For full-time EU and International students joining us, this will be £16,500.
